The MEDIA research group is part of the School of Computer and Communication Sciences at the EPFL.
The group is deeply involved in research and training activities that relate to complex structured documents and, their use through global information systems over the Internet.
The representation of electronic documents has moved away from the simple encoding practises of early usage, towards richer encoding that indicate the structure of the document as well as multimedia and metadata extensions. There has been a tendency towards developping and supporting standards for this task. XML (eXtended Markup Language), is one of the well-known of these standards and is currently supported by an increasing variety of related standards and tools that provide efficient management of "document oriented" data on the Web.
Our research is about document models, languages and methods that encompass the use of electronic documents, as processable units of information, in Web-based environments.
Offering new paradigms - based on rich user interfaces - for authoring and reusing structured information as well as supporting collaborative processes among nomadic users is of major concern in the MEDIA research group.

The EPFL has decided to adopt new graphics standards. Our Website is based on XML technologies which promote a clear distinction between content and rendering ... it was very easy to adapt its appearance.
The AXEL (Adaptable XML Editing Library) Javascript library is an open source software that provides XML authoring facilities for the Web. It comes from research done in the framework of the Integrated European Project PALETTE in collaboration with the WAM (Web, Adapation and Multimedia) team at INRIA Grenoble.
The library is currently evolving thanks to our participation in a project funded by the Confederation’s innovation promotion agency CTI with our partner MadeinLocal.

Markus Pilman from the Systems Group at ETH Zurich arrived first with a demonstration of "iZorba - developing iPhone apps entirely in #XQuery", while Stéphane Sire from the Media Research Group at EPFL arrived second with a demonstration of "auto-editable Web sites with XTiger XML and AXEL in the browser".
They also presented papers at the conference. The proceedings are available online
